In this episode, Emiliya speaks with Laurie, a mother and positive psychology change agent who shares how she used real-time resilience to get her through a parent’s worst nightmare, supporting her family during the aftermath of her son’s mountain biking accident. She found that staying in the present moment, choosing her mindset and other resilience skills were the key to managing the crisis.
Practicing resilience and teaching others through stories of lived experiences
Laurie was drawn to positive psychology during the pandemic and signed up for the CAPP program. She had an awakening around the opportunity for dialogue around wellness and mental health, a collective experience offered to us by the pandemic. She realized she wanted to be a bright light and contribute through teaching resilience skills to others, but struggled with finding stories about using resilience in her own life.
Resilience during a parent’s worst nightmare
Life gave Laurie the opportunity to put resilience to the test in her family. One of her children (she’s a mom of two twin boys) got into a serious mountain biking accident that landed him in the hospital where he fought for his life. Laurie didn’t know whether her son would survive and had to use her resilience skills to work with the situation and support her family.
Being fully present, learning to embrace and choice of mindset are keys to resilience
Mental, emotional, physical and spiritual skills can be applied both in small challenges in daily life as well as large, life-threatening circumstances. Laurie felt positive about how she supported her family, but that didn’t mean she didn’t experience pain, sorrow and incredible worry in the moment.
Laurie used mental resilience skills to work with her mind chatter, while being aware of the truth of how she was really feeling. Reflecting on her experience, Laurie realized that being fully present in the moment, choosing her mindset and embracing what was needed were key skills that got her through the crisis.
