About CAPP Instructors

CAPP was created by Emiliya Zhivotovskaya who was one of the 1st 70 people in the world to earn a Master's in Applied Positive Psychology (MAPP) from the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied under the founder of the field, Dr. Martin Seligman.

Emiliya is the CEO and Founder of The Flourishing Center, and pioneer of the PERMA-V™ model. Her vision was simple: train Change Agents in the science, and give them the tools, and business support to help them help others flourish.

What began as the first-ever applied positive psychology certification has now grown into a global network of instructors—many of them MAPP graduates—leading CAPP cohorts around the world.

With multiple time zones and live classes to choose from, you’ll learn from seasoned practitioners who live what they teach, and support you every step of the way.

Who is CAPP for?

CAPP is for aspiring and active Change Agents who want to make a measurable, meaningful difference in the world around them.

Take the 5i Agent Quiz

A Change Agent is a catalyst who actively guides individuals, groups, or systems through purposeful transformation toward a more adaptive, thriving future.

Through CAPP, we immerse Change Agents in cutting-edge research, hands-on coaching practice, and a vibrant community of peer innovators, giving them the evidence-based tools, confidence, and network they need to design and deliver impact-driven well-being initiatives.

We have five types of Change Agents. Which one are you?

Individualizers work one-on-one to create powerful, personalized transformation. Coaches, therapists, and counselors often identify here. CAPP helps Individualizers deepen their impact, structure their offerings, and avoid burnout.

Inventors use creativity to inspire and scale impact. Think authors, facilitators, and course creators. CAPP gives Inventors the science and tools to bring bold ideas to life with substance and clarity.

Implementers embed well-being into organizations and systems. HR professionals, educators, DEI leads, and managers fit this profile. CAPP offers plug-and-play frameworks and the data needed to influence leadership and culture.

Integrators apply positive psychology within traditional roles—like teachers, doctors, lawyers, and health professionals—blending compassion with professionalism. CAPP helps Integrators articulate their value and differentiate their approach.

Infusers bring positivity into everyday life, relationships, and communities. Often parents, retirees, students, or career explorers. CAPP gives Infusers direction, tools, and confidence to lead in nontraditional ways.

What You'll Learn

The PERMA-V Framework

CAPP is grounded in The Flourishing Center’s proprietary PERMA-V™ model—an expanded, research-backed evolution of Martin Seligman’s foundational PERMA framework. The “V” for Vitality, championed by Emiliya Zhivotovskaya and later endorsed by Seligman himself, emphasizes the essential role of the body in well-being.

Over the course of 36 weeks, CAPPsters meet live twice a week as they move through six integrated modules, each focused on one pillar of human flourishing:

“The Vitality module alone transformed how I show up for myself and my clients. It’s the missing piece I didn’t know I needed.”

Cindy Tisdall-McPhee, Educator

“Vitality made me reimagine how I structure my days, support my clients, and take care of myself as a facilitator.”

Jennifer Shin, Coach & Creator of The Flourishing Mother Planner

“From stress recovery to breathwork to nutrition, the Vitality module helped me reset my nervous system—and finally teach others how to do the same.”

Eliza Kingsford, Behavior Change Expert

“The content was so well-structured and accessible. I was blown away by how deeply we explored each topic, and how immediately applicable it all was.”

Maria Kennedy, Women’s Leadership Facilitator

“The PERMA-V model was a game changer for me. It gave me a clear, science-backed framework to build my coaching practice around.”

Aurelie Foucart, Leadership Coach

  Module 1: Positivity

Positivity is the first pathway we’ll explore in the study of human flourishing. It is the foundation of positive psychology and introduces you to the fundamental skills needed for individuals to create lasting happiness.

Think of this as your journey of joy!

Throughout the Positivity Module, we will teach you how to build positive emotions and use them as tools to feel happier, increase resilience, and achieve greater life satisfaction.

We’ll develop your understanding of emotional intelligence, train you to work with a full spectrum of emotions, and avoid getting stuck in the negative.

We’ll teach you the neuroscience that drives behavior change and how to shift mindsets to overcome our natural tendencies toward negativity bias.

And you’ll learn the fundamental skills of positivity, including resilience, optimism, gratitude, and praise, and how to bring these skills to others through proven practices that are simple, accessible, and transformational.

  Module 2: Engagement

Engagement is about being fully present and connected to the world around you. It’s referred to as being “in the zone” or known as a state of peak performance that’s realized when you experience the perfect combination of challenge and skill

Throughout the Engagement Module, you will learn to become more aware, alive, and enhance your ability to be wholly absorbed in an activity.

We’ll teach you how to prevent disengagement and absenteeism, and to use the powerful concept of flow as a transcendent tool for engagement.

You’ll learn mindfulness, meditation, and savoring as simple strategies to increase focus and decrease psychological distress.

We’ll teach you practical ways to build your capacity to self-regulate, increase your willpower, and use these techniques for better decision-making.

And, we’ll teach you all about character strengths and how to align these with the work you do in the world to achieve peak performance and maximum life satisfaction.

  Module 3: Relationships

The Relationships Module explores our natural desire as human beings to belong, connect, and contribute. Relationships bring us the highest of highs and the lowest of lows and, unfortunately, don’t come with instructions. But, we have you covered.

Think of this module as your manual for relationship success.

In Relationships, we’ll teach you various models that foster social connections—from how to form trust and lead more authentically, to how beliefs and behaviors spread in social networks.

You’ll learn to inspire acts of kindness, build volunteerism, and facilitate belonging, all of which foster social contagion.

You’ll learn how to navigate the dynamics of difficult relationships, demonstrate strategies for diffusing stressful situations, and proven methods for non-violent communications.

And, we’ll teach you all about high quality connections, the mutual benefits they offer, and their ability to transform families, friends, colleagues, communities, and the world-at-large.

  Module 4: Meaning

Meaning provokes us to ask and answer what is my purpose in life? It’s a personal exploration of our intrinsic need to understand, seek, and find that purpose

Think of Meaning as your superpower that readies you to uncover why you do what you do.

In the Meaning Module, we’ll teach you the differences between meaning and purpose, how they influence growth and resiliency, and their impact on our ability to flourish.

You’ll learn the origins of belief, explore the relationship of neuroscience and spiritual practices, and examine transcendence and awe as powerful interventions for happiness.

You’ll explore the process of post-traumatic growth and how to make meaning out of difficult experiences.

We’ll show you how goals, values, and passions can guide you on your path to purpose.

And, we’ll teach you how to craft a sense of calling, and use the process to propel others into an upward spiral of flourishing.

  Module 5: Achievement

Achievement is the sense of accomplishment that results from working toward and attaining a goal. It signals mastery over something important and evokes a sense of pride that contributes to wellbeing.

In the Achievement Module, we’ll teach you the science of building hope, efficacy, and confidence and how to leverage these skills to more effectively achieve your goals as well as help others do the same.

You’ll learn about visualization and the best practices for using this powerful technique for emotional, physical, and cognitive enhancement.

You’ll study evolutionary neuroscience and learn about the brain’s influence on habit creation, adaptation, and transformation.

The Achievement Module also introduces you to important theories that underpin positive psychology-based coaching, including self-efficacy, emotional intelligence, self-determination, and grit. We’ll teach you how to integrate these theories into your practice so that you can help individuals achieve new levels of wellness far north of neutral.

  Module 6: Vitality

Vitality refers to a feeling of aliveness and is associated with positive energy, exuberance, zest, and zeal. It connects high-level physical wellness to the previous five pathways of study and, therefore, is introduced as the sixth pathway of the PERMA-V model of flourishing.

In the Vitality Module, we explore the science of the mind-body connection and teach people how to increase and sustain vital personal energy to promote optimal physical health.

You’ll learn enablers of Vitality, including sleep, movement, balancing calm and stress, nutrition absorption, nature, and positive sexuality.

You’ll study the principle of homeodynamics, understand your body's innate intelligence system and explore the concept of fascial fitness.

We’ll teach you about ergonomics, introduce relaxation techniques, demonstrate the benefits of touch, and utilize breathing as a tool to improve overall wellbeing.

And we’ll conclude our journey in positive psychology by reinforcing that your own Vitality can energize everyone around you and serve as a magnet for your positive psychology practice.

How CAPP Compares to Academic Programs

CAPP is the world’s first certification in applied positive psychology—pioneering the field since 2012.

While academic programs focus on research and theory, CAPP gives you in-depth training in the science but emphasizes applied skills, practice, and action. It's ideal for purpose-driven professionals who want to create immediate impact, without pausing their careers or enrolling in graduate school.

FAQs

What types of students enter the Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Program? Expand

For a complete guide to the 5 types of change agents that we serve, and your own personalized map for accelerating your work as a positive psychology practitioner, please check out our 5i Change Agent Quiz.

We have three subsets of students:

1) Those who use the training for professional use within an organization.

These people are change agents within the companies they work for and want to enhance their skill set. This includes teachers, managers, directors, executives, salespeople, lawyers, assistants, nurses, physical therapists, social workers and many others who interact with, support and lead others.

2) Those who use the training for professional use as independent contractors or entrepreneurs.

These people are change agents who work for themselves and use the science to enhance the validity of what they are doing, expand their toolkit, grow their business, and offer their clients expertise in a broad range of topics within PP. This includes coaches, consultants, speakers, trainers, therapists, writers, veterinarians, clergy members, wellness practitioners, chiropractors, hypnotists, holistic healers, fitness professionals, music teachers, tutors, and more

3) Those who use the program for their own personal growth and development.

These people may not have a direct application for positive psychology in their professional lives, but they are passionate about being change agents and know that the first place to start is within them. Many of our students identify their life purpose and calling through the journey they go on in the program. They apply their training to every aspect of their life. In particular, those who are parents, or expectant parents, find the training to be priceless in transforming the way they interact with and support their family.

Do I need a background or a degree in psychology in order to take this program? Expand

No, this program is open to anyone who is interested in learning the science of happiness and well-being, and applying it into their personal and/or professional life.

No prerequisite in psychology is required because we teach you everything that you need to know, and how to interpret the research in science to fit your needs. We guide you every step of the way.

Learn more about how our graduates are using their Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) certificates.

What can I call myself once I complete this program? Expand

Graduates of the program can refer to themselves as certified applied positive psychology practitioners.

For Canadian residents and practitioners, please refer to the C.P.P.A. guidelines below in regards to the title.

How can I use my Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Certificate professionally? Expand

The Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) certificate can be applied professionally in any industry. Many of our graduates apply it to the work they are already doing by teaching, speaking, coaching, training, creating programs and products based on science. We support our students in identifying how they can best apply the research and tools in their field. We provide experts from fields such as business, coaching, education, tutoring, parenting, law, writing, health and wellness, yoga, and other fields. We interview Positive Psychology leaders who are applying positive psychology in various industries to learn from them about how this research is being translated.

Our students use their final project as an opportunity to create an application of positive psychology for themselves after they finish the program. Also, once you graduate from the program, you join our community of Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Alumni where you continue to receive monthly support on the application of positive psychology professionally.

What are the differences between M.A.P.P. (Masters in Applied Positive Psychology) and C.A.P.P. (Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology)? Expand

Watch M.A.P.P. graduate and C.A.P.P. Program facilitator, Sid Efromovich describes the differences between the programs.

Both the M.A.P.P. and Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) programs attract thought leaders from diverse fields, change-agents that are dedicated to being the change they want to see in the world.  Both are executive education models that are taught via live sessions over the course of our 9- month program. Both M.A.P.P. and C.A.P.P. are grounded in rigorous science and both aim to be at the leading edge of research.

Some of the differences are that Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) puts a greater emphasis on the application of positive psychology than M.A.P.P. is able to.

Instead of doing assignments that are focused on reading peer-reviewed journal articles and writing papers (as is more typical in a psychology Master's degree) our students watch lecture videos and listen to a synthesis of the studies. There is one required reading textbook, the rest is optional reading.

We have digested hundreds of hours of positive psychology research so that our students could learn the tools and focus more on application. They can always go back to read the original studies if they want more details. Both programs adhere to the science, but M.A.P.P. is more academic.

The way that the courses are structured is also very different– Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (CAPP) focuses on experiential learning and teaching our students a framework for flourishing (PERMA-V) whereas M.A.P.P. is structured as a series of masters-level psychology classes that are divided into themes such as a research class, a positive interventions class, positive individuals, institutions, etc.

The Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Program also draws research from various scientific fields not just positive psychology. We include cognitive neuroscience, mind-body medicine, contemplative practice, nonviolent communication and motivational interviewing.

We have had a number of M.A.P.P. graduates who have done our program because one of the perks of doing Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) is that you get all 2,900 PowerPoint slides to repurpose for your own personal and professional use.

Some of our M.A.P.P. grads do Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) for continuing education and to get access to the materials. Those who do both programs agree that Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) covers many topics that aren’t necessary covered in M.A.P.P.. For example, M.A.P.P. does not cover any neuroscience where it is a whole module in the C.A.P.P. program.

Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) has been designed for busy practitioners and caters to multiple learning styles. Students watch online lecture videos in preparation for weekly teleclasses where they get to talk to their classmates about how to put the research into practice and training and honing their positive psychology skills.

Instead of writing a Capstone or a Master’s Thesis, Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) students are required to complete a final project that can be anything that is personally or professionally useful to them.

One strength of M.A.P.P. is that your professors are the leading researchers in positive psychology today. However, students find that having a few dozen professors is more challenging than having the structure of one teacher. In the Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Program, we do bring in leading scientists in positive psychology on a regular basis.  We have featured researchers such as Sonja Lyubomirsky, Todd Kashdan, Robert Emmons, Andrew Newberg, Stephen Post and more.  We also focus heavily on how positive psychology is translated in different fields. Every month we bring in a different Positive Psychology Practitioner, which is frequently a M.A.P.P. Graduate or a C.A.P.P. (Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology) Graduate, and we look at how they uniquely translate positive psychology in their industry. Thus, our students get to learn about how Positive Psychology is being used in education, coaching, business, law, writing, with kids, with the elderly, and so on.

Students get to hear from and ask questions to people working in a myriad of settings to create their own unique approach to spreading positive psychology.

The M.A.P.P. program is a graduate degree and as such includes the monetary investment and amount of work commensurate with that level. M.A.P.P. is currently ~ $60,000 US not including travel and accommodations. The Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Program is a fraction of the cost. Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (CAPP) is also significantly lower time investment as well.  Students can put in as little as 5 hours a week to meet the minimum requirements of both attendance and pre-recorded lecture watching, or as much as 40 hours a week if they have the time to do all the supplementary reading and watching.

Both Certificates in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) and M.A.P.P. programs have robust alumni communities that focus on continuing education to build the skills, knowledge, and camaraderie of change-agents working in the world. There is no application and acceptance process required for the Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) program, just a registration with the only prerequisite being a curiosity. (Although we also tend to find that people also come with a burning desire to make a difference in the world.)

Also, you get the advantage of starting right away. Not only do the Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Cohort programs run three times a year, we give our students that pay in full early access to the online platform so you could start going through your Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Material and get a head start.

We’re happy to connect with you via phone and get a sense of what would serve you best at this time in your life. Just let us know if you’d like to set up an appointment.

The Certificate in Applied Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Program is not intended to be a coach certification program. While we cover many coaching tools throughout Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) and have an entire module on coaching psychology, it is not specifically a coach certification program.

Many of our students go into private practice through their training as positive psychology practitioners or positive psychology-based coaches, however that depends on the individual’s expertise and skill set.

All of our students learn the scientific underpinnings of many of the tools that they can use to coach their clients, so they feel much more empowered when they work with their clients because they understand the science behind flourishing and well-being.

Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) is an ICF-approved accredited program for existing coaches and offers 50 CCE hours upon graduation, which can be used when applying for ICF Coaching credential renewal.

We also offer a Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology Coaching (A.P.P.C.) Program for Certificate in Applied Positive Psychology (C.A.P.P.) Alumni for students that want a deeper dive into coaching skills. This program is an ACTP with the ICF and qualifies students for 175-hours of coach training.

The American Psychological Association is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States, with more than 122,500 researchers, educators, clinicians, consultants, and students as its members.

APA’S 54 divisions are interest groups organized by members. Some represent sub-disciplines of psychology (e.g., experimental, social, or clinical) while others focus on topical areas such as aging, ethnic minorities, or trauma.

The Flourishing Centre (the Canadian sister company of the US Flourishing Center) is also partnered with The Canadian Positive Psychology Association (C.P.P.A.).
