Episode 95: THE MOVIE OF YOUR LIFE – Flourishing Friday

What if there was one question you could ask every week, month or year that could make a remarkable impact on your wellbeing? In this episode, Emiliya explores the question: If I were watching the movie of my life right now, would I be applauding who and how I am?

Listen in as Emiliya shares how this question exemplifies the principles of positive psychology and how it can be a useful tool to incorporate into your life.

The positive psychology of the movie of your life

If the answer to this question is yes, you can apply positive psychology and appreciate that you’re likely in alignment with your goals and values.

If the answer is no, then this question becomes a great way to be real with yourself. It will also prompt you to ask the next question: What needs to change?

Using the principles of compassion and growth mindset to shift your movie narrative

The question of whether you’re feeling good about your role as the main character in the movie of your life illustrates positive psychology principles like compassion, growth mindset, and the story-telling function of the brain. And the answer to this question can be the difference between thriving and languishing.

Sometimes when you’re facing difficulties all you can do is put one foot in front of the other. Taking the time to appreciate that you’re doing the best you can represents self compassion and can improve your wellbeing. Having a growth mindset can also be a positive way to deal with a “no” response, because it represents the truth that things are not fixed, they will change. This provides the opportunity to pivot. Finally, the human brain is wired for storytelling. How we choose to tell the story of our personal movie can be the difference between being resilient and languishing.

Ask yourself, “if I were watching my life as a movie and I was the main character, would I be proud or would I want to make some changes? Take some time to take a look at how you’re showing up in life and reflect on it as a part of your flourishing Friday.
